LENS RECORDS
Lens Records is a Chicago based record label created to help support and distribute the works of artists who prefer to work with a smaller, artist driven label. The label has released a variety of work in different genres including ambient, experimental, dark ambient, electronic, rock, modern classical, electroacoustic and field recordings...
Known for several decades as one of the world’s premiere studio harmonica players, William Galison broadened his scope in 2004 by recording the Got You On My Mind album with legendary chanteuse Madeleine Peyroux, on which he also played guitar and sang a few tunes, as well as produced and arranged. In addition to achieving retail sales certified in excess of $1 million over the past 6 years–no small feat for an independent label release–the album is internationally acclaimed for its superb mix of originals and standards. Jazz Times called it “a match made in Musical Heaven”.
Prior to his great success teaming up with Peyroux, Will’s unique harmonica sound could be heard on the themes of Sesame Street, The Untouchables, Bagdad Café, and hundreds of other movie scores, albums and commercials. Toots Thielemans, the Master of the harmonica, acknowledged Will as “The Most Original and Individual of the New Generation of Harmonica Players.
In 2008, Will gained further notoriety with his release of the music video “Takin’ it Back with Barack”, which The Huffington Post rated the best campaign song of the election season. The video, which features Will Galison on harmonica and lead vocals, has been viewed over 600,000 times on Youtube, including–according to campaign manager David Axelrod–several times by the President himself. “Takin it Back” gave Will’s fans a taste of his clever and poignant lyricism, and left them wanting more.
Happily, it turns out that while Galison was busy as a studio and performing musician, he was quietly writing first class music. From this writing comes the tracks which comprise Line Open, eleven songs spanning a wide musical and emotional range, yet unified by Will’s sly wit, compassionate outlook, and deeply rooted musicality. Line Open is a tour de force, featuring Galison’s unique gifts as harmonica virtuoso, guitarist, composer, lyricist, singer and arranger, together with some of New York’s top musicians.
As celebrated as Will has been as an instrumentalist, this album establishes him as a world class singer-songwriter whose lyrics and melodies will appeal to a wide audience. Based on the acclaim of his previous work, we’re guessing Worldwide. You dig?
