Before Sleater-Kinney was performing on network talk shows, before the onslaught of adorably angry Alanis Morissette clones, before the media descended and sold boundary-immolating bravery as sanitized girl power, there was Riot Grrrl. And now we have "don't need you”, a time capsule and call to arms disguised as a documentary film, exploring the origins of this incendiary offshoot of punk that fused queer, feminist outsider politics with the stripped-down fury of experimental, DIY music, art, and writing. Through interviews and concert footage with key figures at the genesis of the movement, including members of Bikini Kill, Heavens to Betsy, Bratmobile, and supporters like Ian Mackaye of Fugazi, the film hurtles into the early 90s revolutionary underground of indie and punk rock misfits who couldn’t even catch a break in their allegedly high-minded scene. The film also showcases the now rare ephemera that propelled the movement along shadowy networks of radical youth, including original Riot Grrrl fanzines, flyers, and photographs. Not only necessary viewing for those who lived and grew through the movement, Don't Need You: The Herstory of Riot Grrrl should be tucked into the cradles of all newborns.
